Uniontown Area School Board receives positive reports

April 22, 2008

The Uniontown Area School Board received several positive reports regarding Lafayette School at its regular board meeting Monday.

Dr. Charles Machesky, superintendent, read a letter the district received from state Rep. Timothy Mahoney, D-South-Union Twp., who, along with his aide, Neil Christopher, unexpectedly visited the school and reported that he had a very positive experience. Principals Paula Work and Joe Galie took a tour with Mahoney through the school.

“Lafayette School is going in a positive direction,” wrote Mahoney, stating that many schools in his legislative district have problems, and they need to work together.

UHS holds mock election

April 22, 2008

Students at Uniontown Area High School took advantage of discovering more about the political process through a mock election held at the school Tuesday.

More than 200 students in grades nine through 12, most still too young to vote, registered as either a Democrat or Republican and then cast a Pennsylvania ballot for the presidential candidate of their choice at polls set up near the school bus patio.

Many students, some wearing Barack Obama pins and T-shirts, registered as Democratic voters, according to social studies teacher Bob Manges, who organized the event.
